Rachel Veitch, now 93 years old, drove her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente for more than 576,000 miles before hanging the keys up for good.
She said in an interview with Fox News that her “near-obsessive” approach to the car’s maintenance is what has kept it running for so long.
Yahoo, who also covered the story, reports that the car has had three sets of shocks, 18 batteries, and eight mufflers in the last 48 years. According to our vehicle maintenance math, the Comet has also had nearly 200 oil changes, about 20 sets of brakes, and probably five transmissions.
The car still runs, but Veitch, who is now legally blind, has no plans to pass the car along to her family. Perhaps she’ll find someone who will care for it as well as she did, and the Comet can give Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo P1800 a run for its money – it has nearly 3 million miles on it.
April is National Car Care Month, so now is the perfect time to bring your vehicle in for its routine maintenance. Find a Tuffy store near you and stop by today for a complimentary diagnostic.
